The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office strives to provide inmates entrusted to its custody with all the protections and rights afforded to them by the America’s legal traditions and due process. As such, the Office permits inmates access to various legal, medical, religious and social professionals as an inmate’s needs require.

Attorneys, interpreters, clergy and medical or social professionals who desire to visit with a specific inmate must follow the following procedures:

  • Professional access to inmates will be permitted in the jail from 7:00 A.M. through 9:30 P.M. 7 days a week. All visits are subject to approval by the Tour Commander on duty.
  • Upon arrival, professionals will be asked to give their name and provide proper identification, such as a Bergen County Sheriff-issued identification card, Attorney Bar Association card, Motor Vehicle License or Medical License, to the Reception Officer on duty.
  • All persons entering the secure area of the Bergen County Jail must deposit cell phones, coats, keys, tobacco products and any other prohibited items in the lockers provided. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN FINES AND CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.
  • While visiting an inmate, only soft sided file folders are permitted within the jail The inmate may not be given anything other than legal papers.
  • Items such as money, pens, highlighters, paper clips, jewelry, matches, lighters, cigarettes and chewing gum are considered contraband and are strictly prohibited.
  • Items from an inmate’s family cannot be given to the inmate.
  • Property of persons entering the Bergen County Jail may be searched at any time.

Visiting Guidelines For Family

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office permits inmates to receive personal visitors during their incarceration in order to maintain appropriate ties to their family and community.

Visitation with inmates is permitted only during pre-scheduled times according to the housing unit which they have been assigned to.

ALL VISITORS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED BEFORE THEY ARE ALLOWED TO VISIT. The inmate must provide the list of visitors to the Jail Staff in accordance with the inmate rules for visitation. Visitors must also verify the approved visiting hours.

Approved visitors may be: Parents, Guardians, Spouse, Significant Other, Grandparent, Sibling or Child.

The Bergen County Jail is a fully secure correctional facility and all visitors are required to adhere to the following procedures at all times. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN FINES AND CRIMINAL PROSECUTION.

All visitors and their personal property are subject to search at any time.

  • Visitors may not give anything to or take anything from an inmate. Any individual found attempting to pass controlled substances or contraband to inmates will be arrested immediately.
  • All visitors must check in with the Reception Desk and identify the name of the inmate they intend to visit. If the inmate is not available for a visit due to circumstances such as a court appearance or sick call, visitors will be informed and directed to return at a later time or during the next visiting session.
  • Government-issued photo identification, such as a valid driver’s license, Welfare card, Medicaid card, passport, employment ID, or state-issued ID card, must be presented by EACH adult visitor to the Reception Officer on duty. Visitors who do not have proper identification will not be permitted to visit.
  • Visitors must be appropriately dressed. Shoes, shirts and appropriate underclothing must be worn. Visitors wearing suggestive clothing, transparent fabric, short-shorts or mini-skirts will not be permitted to visit.
  • Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who must present either a birth certificate or court documentation showing appointment of legal guardianship. Minors must be supervised at all times by the parent or legal guardian.
  • Visitors must remain in the assigned visiting area during the visit.
  • Visitors determined to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted visitation and may be subject to arrest.
  • No packages, clothing or items of any kind will be accepted at the Reception Desk. The Reception Desk will not accept mail, money, photographs or correspondence from visitors to inmates.
